Cafe Zen is a very relaxed and cozy place in Kitsilano, with very little traffic but trees and grass and birds that make you forget about your latest deadline at work. The interiour is bright and open, providing a surprising amount of seating considering the seemingly narrow storefront. There is outside seating as well.
There was no wait time and we could choose our own table.
Only 10 minutes it took for our order to be brought to us.
The breakfast menu is the 2nd varied I have ever seen. Several choices of Omelettes and Bennies, with the possibility to create your own variations. The is the first place I have seen where you can have two different bennies in one serving. Other typical breakfast entries are available as well.
I had the Omelette Fermi for CAD 11.99 and my collaborator had the Eggs Benedict California for CAD 9.29.
My serving consisted of a huge dish on which the biggest Omelette I have seen so far resided, while a good portion of fried potatoes served as side. My Omelette contained ham, sausage, cheese, tomato, green pepper, mushroom and onion.
It was a feast. The egg part of the meal tasted fantastic; I have never had a better one. The whole ensemble was delicious: nothing was too soft, no ingredient stood out, instead, everything was matched into one huge Omelette that is as of now my reference that every Omelette shall be measured on. Not to forget the potatoes: they tasted just right, not too soft and not too hard.
My partner's dish was not quite as expansive but well proportioned nonetheless. The serving contained 2 Bennies California with avocado and tomato and fried potatoes as side. I gave my partner a few moments before I inquired about the taste and feel of her Bennies and had a bite myself. The result: we have now a new reference for Bennies as well. (That's out of 8 restaurants so far.)
The eggs were perfect, the sauce hollandaise was perfect and the tomato/avocado blended in beautifully. The potatoes were just as good as mine.

Our waitress was very responsive and even though she seemed not overly friendly at that time, did her job very well.
The prices are just are pretty good, considering the quality as well as quantity of the food. Omelettes will cost you CAD 11 in average and Bennies are about CAD 10.
There is outside seating, consisting of 3 tables, that is surrounded by a fence. So, definitely dog friendly!
