The Franco-German restaurant La Brasserie has a very open and clean store front. Nine tables, half encased by a L-shaped banquette are tightly placed, while a large part of the bar is directly connected to the cooking area. That and the black ceiling, dark wooden tables and chairs combined with slightly dim lighting suggest comfort and intimacy.
Arriving at the La Brasserie on a Saturday noon, the place was only half filled with people and we didn't have to wait to be seated.
The time between ordering and receiving our dishes was only 14 minutes.
The brunch menu is not the typical egg and bacon pamphlet, but rather contains a list of creative items, such as Savoury Crepes (chicken, mushrooms, sauce mornay) or Croque Madame (brioche, porchetta, poached egg, sauce choron).
I chose the Omelette du Jour (CAD 11) and my collaborator had the Croque Madame (CAD 13) with an additional poached egg (CAD 2). As drinks we had Earl Grey black tea and hot water.
My dish's setting was dominated by fresh greens covering an omelette joined by a slice of crunchy and very tasty bread, served on a preheated plate. The omelette was a delightful mix of egg, cheese and red pepper melted into one smooth and tasteful conception. In other words, I really liked it. The portion was rather small and at first I thought I might need an additional dish but at the end it turned out to be just enough.
My collaborator's dish featured the very same arrangement of greens, leaning on the protagonist of the setting: Croque Madame. A croque madame is essentially a hot ham and cheese grilled sandwich, topped by a fried or, as in our case, poached egg. The bread used here was tender and fit in well with the rest of the assembly. The egg was soft to bite, but not runny. The dish, even with the additional egg, left my partner in crime still hungry for more. In short, the dish was somewhat too small for her.
Our waitress was friendly and responded to our requests in a professional manner. Overall, the place seems to be very professionally managed.
The prices range from CAD 11 for the Omelette to CAD 15 for Brasserie Burger.
