The Red Umbrella Cafe is a small all day breakfast and lunch place that features interiour as well as exteriour seating. The interiour's layout is cozy but bright due to a comfortably matte yellow being the main theme and with black chairs adding some contrast to the picture. There are a few tables surrounded by a red railing, serving as outside seating.
There was no waiting to be seated and the place was only half filled with customers, so we found ourselves a table in no time.
15 minutes passed between ordering and receiving the dishes.
The breakfast menu contains most of the typical items, like bennies, omelettes and eggs and bacon. I ordered the standard Eggs Benedict and my partner had the Veggie Eggs Benedict, both for CAD 8.
Our drinks were hot water and coffee.
Both dishes had the same setting: two bennies and pan fried potatoes and freshly cut onion rings as sides. The dishes looked very appetizing.
Now on to tasting: The eggs were cooked to perfection, somewhat runny but not too firm. The ham tasted good and seemed nothing like the generic ham that I have been served in different places. The muffins were tender and together with the sauce hollandaise, completed the main attraction of the dish. The potatoes were a bit on the dry side but dunking them into the sauce corrected that very minor inconvenience. Overall, I really liked it.
My partner's dish was essentially identical to mine, with the exception of tomato and aubergine instead of ham. The eggs were very well cooked and the tomato and aubergine slices, while not bad tasting at all, were not as fresh as they could have been. The potatoes were just like above, a bit dry. Overall, especially factored in the price, the dish was good and enjoyable.
The staff was friendly and responsive, without coming back to our table in five minute intervals, asking about our current opinion on the food or the service.
The prices are really good, with an average of CAD 8 for breakfast items.
The Red Umbrella's outside seating makes it possible for dog owners to have their furry companions close by, while enjoying a good breakfast. The red railing surrounding the tables serves perfectly well as a 'tie up spot' for dogs.
